Jim Salthouse was apprenticed as an engineer
and the last two years of his apprenticeship were spent with H & C
Grayson Ltd., Shipbuilders and Engineers of Liverpool. The picture above presumably was taken between 30 August
1915 and 3 October 1917. Jim is not known to have played football so he
must have known the apprentices and employees in the picture. The writing

This is Jim's
reference from Graysons, dated 3rd October 1917, when he left to enter the
Merchant Navy.
On the enlarged heading, below, you can see the official
stamp on the letter, which reads:
"Controlled Establishment, Munitions of War Act,
1915"
